Help Fight Environmental Crime
Oregon has been a nationwide leader in environmental protection since the beginning of the environmental movement, but we cannot grow complacent. From the Willamette to the Malheur, every major river in Oregon fails federal and state water quality standards for at least one pollutant. Toxic concentrations in Portland's air exceed federal standards and the fog blowing into the Columbia Gorge during winter has higher acidity levels than Pittsburgh's.
That's why we are working hard to start an Environmental Crimes Enforcement Unit at the Oregon Department of Justice. Creating an Environmental Crimes Enforcement Unit will have an immediate effect on polluter behavior by leveling the playing field for companies that are already playing by the rules, while sending a strong and unequivocal message to companies that violate the law: if they purposely, repeatedly and illegally threaten the environment and damage public health, they will be held accountable.
